FAQs

How long does shipping take?

We do our best to keep shipping affordable by working with the big three—UPS, USPS, and FedEx—to get you the best rates. Delivery times can vary depending on how far you are from us, and the most budget-friendly option can sometimes take 7–10 days. If you need your order a little faster, you can choose priority shipping at checkout, which usually gets to you in about two days. Please note that shipments will be held if the temperature in the destination exceed 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Temperatures will be monitored, and shipment will process when we have confidence that the candle will not melt in transit.

Yes—but good news! We offer free shipping on all orders of $100 or more.

Before Lighting

Give the wick a quick trim (about ¼ inch)—it helps your candle burn clean and bright.

Place it somewhere steady and safe, away from drafts, curious kids, or playful pets.

Take a peek at the jar to make sure there are no cracks—safety first!

Wipe away any dust or bits so the surface is clear and your burn stays smooth.

Let it glow evenly the first time. On your first burn, let the wax melt all the way to the edges (about 2–3 hours). This helps prevent tunneling and sets your candle up for a long, even life.

Keep burns under 4 hours. Longer sessions can mess with the wax and overheat the ceramic—short and sweet is best.

Wick wandering? If the wick drifts off-center, gently nudge it back (tweezers work great!) once the flame is out and the wax has cooled a bit.

Watch your flame. If it’s dancing too wildly, burning too high, or making smoke, it’s time to blow it out, trim the wick, and start fresh.

Give it some space. Keep your candle at least 12 inches away from anything else to avoid overheating and let it do its thing safely.

Use a snuffer if you can. It’s the gentlest way to put out the flame. Or dip the wick into the melted wax with something non-flammable, then straighten it back up. Blowing it out works in a pinch, but it can get smoky or splashy.

Let it cool before moving. The wax needs time to settle and the ceramic can stay warm for a while—give it a little rest before you pick it up.

Store it smart. Keep your candle in a cool, dry spot, out of direct sunlight or heat. It helps the wax stay beautiful and firm.

Wipe it down gently. If you notice a bit of soot on the ceramic, just wait until it’s cool, then use a soft, damp cloth to clean it up. Skip the harsh stuff—your candle likes the gentle touch.

Know when it’s time. When there’s about ½ inch of wax left, it’s best to stop burning. This helps protect the ceramic and keeps things safe.

When about ½ inch of wax remains, it’s time to retire the flame—but not the vessel. Here’s how to clean it up and repurpose it:

  1. Let any leftover wax fully harden.

  2. Pop the vessel in the freezer for a few hours to help loosen the wax.

  3. Gently remove the wax and wick base with a spoon or butter knife—no need to force it.

  4. Wash with warm, soapy water and dry it well.

  5. Now it’s ready to become whatever you like—a cute planter, a catch-all container, or a charming little accent piece.

A quick note: Our ceramic vessels aren’t made for microwaves, ovens, or dishwashers—keep them away from high heat and sudden temperature changes to avoid cracking.

  • Never leave a burning candle unattended. Always stay nearby while it’s lit, and be sure to blow it out before leaving the room or heading to bed.

  • Keep it out of reach. Little hands and curious paws should stay far away from open flames.

  • Watch where you place it. Keep your candle away from anything flammable and out of drafty spots where the flame could misbehave.

  • Handle with care. The ceramic vessel can get hot—let it cool completely before touching or moving it.

  • Sensitive to scents? Our candles are made with fragrance oils, which can occasionally cause irritation. If that happens, discontinue use and check in with your doctor.

If you ever notice something unusual—like extra smoke or a crack in the vessel—snuff the candle right away and reach out to us at hello@almajoe.com. We’re always here to help.

What’s the best way to enjoy my candle?

Some candles have a very strong scent because they use petroleum products and chemicals that burn hotter and emit a stronger smell. However, these products also release carcinogens into your home. AlmaJoe candles are clean burning. They will burn for longer (up to 80 hours) at a lower temperature. However, this also means our candles are more subtle. Personally, we find this to be more pleasant than candles which are linked to cancer and give you a headache.

The best way to enjoy the unique smell of our candles is to burn in an area that is free of draft or wind. You’ll enjoy the strongest scent in smaller rooms like an office, bedroom, or bathroom. Be sure to allow enough time for the top layer of wax to liquify and form a larger burn pool. You’ll also want to clear the wax of debris and trim the wick to ¼ inch prior to each lighting.

Alma Joe candles are clean burning. We don’t use petroleum byproducts like paraffins or chemicals like phthalates. Our candles are made in a B-corp certified lab using all-natural soy and coconut wax, 100% pure cotton wicks, and essential oils. We never use dyes or artificial enhancers.
